2027 BMW 3 Series Unveiled: New G50 Gets M350 xDrive and Neue Klasse Design

BMW has officially unveiled the 2027 BMW 3 Series, bringing the iconic sports sedan into the brand’s new Neue Klasse design and technology era. The eighth-generation model, internally known as the G50, will be available with both petrol-powered engines and fully electric powertrains through the closely related BMW i3.

One of the biggest changes is at the top of the combustion-engine range. The familiar M340i has been replaced by the new BMW M350 xDrive, which gets a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, 48V mild-hybrid technology and all-wheel drive.

BMW has also confirmed that a plug-in hybrid version will join the new 3 Series family in the coming year, giving the model range multiple powertrain options.

BMW 3 Series 2027 Design

The BMW 3 Series 2027 adopts BMW’s latest Neue Klasse design language while retaining the classic proportions associated with the nameplate.

The new sedan features a longer wheelbase, short overhangs, wider tracks and more prominently flared wheel arches. The surfaces are cleaner than before, while the flush-fitting door handles automatically extend when the car is unlocked.

BMW has designed the combustion-powered 3 Series and electric i3 to look closely related. The main differences are concentrated around details required by their different powertrain architectures.

The new design gives the 3 Series a more modern appearance without abandoning its traditional three-box sports-sedan profile.

BMW M340i Replaced by M350 xDrive

The most important performance change is the replacement of the M340i with the BMW M350 xDrive.

The new M350 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-six petrol engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system. BMW quotes a combined output of up to 443hp in its global specification, while the US specification is rated at 437hp. Maximum torque is 580Nm in the global specification.

Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW claims a 0-100kmph time of 4.1 seconds, with the top speed electronically limited to 250kmph.

The M350 xDrive remains an M Performance model rather than a full BMW M3, positioning it between the regular 3 Series and the more hardcore M cars.

BMW M350 xDrive Gets Drift Moment

A particularly interesting feature of the new M350 is the Drift Moment function.

BMW says the system can send engine drive exclusively to the rear wheels when activated, creating a rear-wheel-drive driving mode designed for controlled sideways driving. The feature will become available during 2027 and can also be activated through a Remote Software Upgrade on cars already delivered.

The M350 xDrive also receives specific chassis tuning, adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential and variable sport steering as standard.

BMW has additionally developed the car with increased torsional and vertical stiffness to improve its dynamic behaviour.

BMW 3 Series Four-Cylinder Petrol Engine

The new combustion-engine 3 Series range will not be limited to the six-cylinder M350.

BMW will launch the new generation with four-cylinder petrol models as well. In the US market, the BMW 330 and BMW 330 xDrive use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology. The engine develops 255hp and 295lb-ft of torque in that market specification.

All petrol engines use the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and Valvetronic variable valve-control technology.

BMW is also using the 48V mild-hybrid system to improve responsiveness and efficiency, with energy recovered during deceleration stored and reused by the system.

BMW 3 Series 2027 Mild-Hybrid Technology

The new-generation combustion-powered 3 Series follows BMW’s technology-open strategy.

Rather than replacing the combustion engine immediately, BMW is combining petrol engines with 48V mild-hybrid assistance while also offering the fully electric BMW i3 and planning a plug-in hybrid version.

This approach allows the 3 Series family to cover different customer requirements across markets.

BMW has confirmed that the PHEV version will join the lineup during the coming year, although detailed specifications have not yet been announced.

BMW 3 Series Interior and Technology

The cabin of the BMW 3 Series 2027 moves into the Neue Klasse digital era. BMW is introducing a new electronics and software architecture across the model family.

The vehicle uses BMW’s integrated computing and control systems to coordinate driving-related functions, digital features and driver assistance technologies.

The new architecture is designed to provide a more connected user experience while reducing the complexity of individual electronic systems.

The interior also follows the broader Neue Klasse philosophy, with a cleaner dashboard layout and a stronger focus on digital displays and software-based functions.

BMW 3 Series Safety and ADAS

The new BMW 3 Series will feature advanced driver-assistance technology, including SAE Level 2 systems.

BMW says all versions, regardless of whether they use combustion or electric power, will receive improved active safety and driver-assistance functions.

The model also introduces BMW Symbiotic Drive technology, which integrates assistance systems with the vehicle’s broader driving-control architecture.

Exact feature availability can vary by market and variant, so India-specific equipment will need to be confirmed when BMW announces the local version.

BMW 3 Series Chassis and Driving Technology

BMW has retained the model’s focus on driving dynamics with a newly developed chassis.

The new 3 Series uses a double-joint spring-strut front axle and a five-link rear axle. BMW has also revised the anti-roll bar mounting and damping technology to improve body control and ride comfort.

Adaptive Suspension and Adaptive M Suspension are available depending on the variant, while the M350 xDrive gets adaptive M suspension as standard.

BMW has also developed optional sports tyres in 245/35 R20 front and 275/30 R20 rear sizes for customers seeking additional performance.

BMW 3 Series and BMW i3 Electric Connection

Alongside the petrol-powered G50 3 Series, BMW has unveiled the fully electric BMW i3 based on the Neue Klasse architecture.

The i3 is effectively the electric counterpart within the new 3 Series family, although its technical architecture differs from the combustion models.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive produces up to 469hp and 645Nm and uses a 108.7kWh battery. BMW claims a maximum WLTP range of up to 912km for this specification. The i3 40 xDrive uses an 82.8kWh battery and offers up to 710km of WLTP range.

BMW has also confirmed plans for an i3 M60 xDrive M Performance model in 2027.

BMW 3 Series India Launch

BMW has not yet announced an official BMW 3 Series India launch date for the new G50-generation model.

The global unveiling has taken place, but India-specific variants, pricing, specifications and launch timing are still to be confirmed. CarWale also reports that the India launch timeline remains unspecified at this stage.

The current India-market 3 Series is available in the long-wheelbase Gran Limousine configuration, so BMW’s eventual India strategy for the new generation will be important for local buyers.

The new model could eventually bring the latest G50 technology and design language to India, but BMW has not confirmed which versions will be sold locally.

BMW 3 Series 2027 Production and Launch Timeline

Production of the new combustion-powered 3 Series is scheduled to begin during the second half of 2026. BMW’s official information confirms that the new-generation family will then expand with additional powertrain options.

The US-market launch of the initial 330, 330 xDrive, M350 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive models is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

Other markets will receive their own launch schedules depending on local regulations, production and variant strategies.

BMW 3 Series 2026 vs 2027: What’s New?

The biggest change is the move from the current generation to the all-new G50 platform and design. The BMW 3 Series 2027 brings Neue Klasse styling, a new digital and electrical architecture, updated chassis technology and expanded electrification.

The performance hierarchy also changes, with the M340i making way for the M350 xDrive.

The new M350 adds a more powerful six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup, while the upcoming Drift Moment feature adds a new rear-wheel-drive performance mode.

At the same time, BMW is keeping four-cylinder petrol engines in the range and preparing a plug-in hybrid, while the BMW i3 provides the fully electric alternative.

Market Positioning

The new BMW 3 Series G50 represents a major transition for BMW’s core sports sedan. Instead of choosing a single powertrain direction, BMW is offering petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric technology across the broader 3 Series family.

For performance-focused buyers, the M350 xDrive becomes the new combustion flagship, combining a six-cylinder engine with xDrive and 48V mild-hybrid assistance.

The exact India positioning will depend on BMW’s local launch plans and the variants selected for the Indian market.

AutoXRoom Verdict

The 2027 BMW 3 Series brings one of the biggest technology changes in the history of BMW’s compact luxury sedan. The new G50 generation combines Neue Klasse styling and electronics with petrol engines, mild-hybrid technology and an upcoming plug-in hybrid option.

The biggest headline is the BMW M350 xDrive, which replaces the M340i and delivers up to 443hp, a 3.0-litre inline-six engine, xDrive and a claimed 0-100kmph time of 4.1 seconds. The planned Drift Moment function further highlights BMW’s focus on driving dynamics.

For India, however, the key details are still pending: BMW has not yet confirmed the launch date, India-specific variants or pricing for the new G50 3 Series.
